Circa 1942-3 Beautifully coloured Communication Officielle du Governement des Etats-Unis au sujet de Madagascar (135 x 215mm) with above US Winged Eagle with drop down flag over chest carrying Holly & Arrows in each foot dropped over France with message to the People of France explaining that the invasion & occupation of Madagascar is only for the duration of the war & will be returned to France after Victory. ................................................................................................ After the Japanese attacked Ceylon in April 1942 the British felt Madagascar, part of Vichy France could be a base from which the Japanese could cut Allied shipping & supply routes around the Cape of Good Hope. Operation "Ironclad" launched on 5 May with first landing taking place at Diago Suarez & by October the island was secured with the French capitulating 6 Nov 42 it was felt the people of France should have their minds put to rest hense the Air Drops

The CCSG as at 2000 records earliest recorded date of G /11 (CCSG FH V11) as 31 May 1944 this extends that date to 7 Jul 1943 with this used in the period where apparently British & or French censorship existed simultaneously...Pity that the airgraph itself has not survived but still an interesting item with the price reflected wih missing content

No 2 cds with on back partial Paris arrival cds...... The 1st Madagascar war started with Naval bombardments of Ports on 7 May 1883 after France picked a quarrel. Peace came 17 Dec 1885 & Madagascar was made a Protectorate with Diego Suarez becoming a Fr. Possesssion. The French Resident at Tananarive was granted a "Military Escort" & a military franchise existed from 24 June 1885 to 1 January 1890 with the franchise being re-instated 15 Feb 1895 just prior to the 2nd Madagascar Expedition. rn
