[17834] VIET-NAM...VIET-NAM WAR INGOING MAIL to VIET CONG SOLDIER... 1968 (Mar 3) Improvised envelope made from ruled sheet of paper together with letter written 3 Mar to Viet Cong soldier with 66th Regiment, North Vietnam Army bearing adhesive cancelled Hanoi machine date stamp (21 Mar) that has been mutilated possibly by the authorities prior to being carried by military courier to the front as many letters were or later after his capture by US forces.

[19880] VIETNAM - THAILAND..THAI FORCES in VIETNAM WAR.. 1968 (Jan 24) [Thai year 2411] Stampless envelope endorsed "On Service South Vietnam War" together with letter headed "Deep in the Jungle" which is likely Laos to Usa Khompin, Bangkok from Corporal Prasit Khompin, Volunteer Regt., "Queens Cobras" with partial Bangkok 3 slogan, Yannava, Bangkok 12 (29 Jan 1968) arrival slogan & with on reverse Bangkok (29 Jan 1968) transit date stamp & poor black circular Welfare Military P.O. together with fine violet Volunteer Corps /27 Jan 2511 /Vietnam hand stamp of the Queens Cobras. ................................................................................................ The Volunteer Regt. "Queens Cobras" arrived Vietnam September 1967 & combat operations started the following month....Historically in 1963 Thailand permitted the USA to use Air Bases & Naval establishments during the VN war 1955-75 & later contributed other resources including sending infantry soldiers to Vietnam suffering 1351 deaths. Thai forces were however more involved with the "Secret War" & covert operations in Laos 1964 - 72. The US pulled all ground forces out of Vietnam by 12 August 1972 & Thai - US relations in Bangkok became tender & later soured to the extent that by 1977 all US military personnel & bases were closed.

South Korea joined the coalition forces in Vietnam with the first Krean Marines arriving in March 1965 followed in September by the 2nd ROKMC brigade called "The Blue Dragons" on a rotational basis of 4,000 to 5,000 soldiers at any one time time until 1972 when the US forces withdew

The International Commission of Control and Supervision (ICCS) was the result of the Paris peace accords of 27 Jan 1973 to end the war & comprised military and civilian personnel from 2 communist nations, Hungary and Poland & 2 non-communist nations, Canada and Indonesia to supervise the cease-fire, the withdrawal of troops, the dismantlement of military bases, the activity at ports of entry and the return of captured military personnel and foreign civilians, however the war continued until Saigon fell on 30 April 1975. "

After Vietnam invaded & occupied Cambodia Chinese forces invaded Vietnam 17 Feb -16 Mar 1979 & after this short & bloody war of 27 days withdrew with both sides claiming victory hostilities, border skirmishes & infiltrations by both sides continued until 1987

The Cambodian–Vietnamese War began with isolated clashes along the land and maritime boundaries of Vietnam and Kampuchea between 1975 and 1977. In May 1977 Kampuchean forces under Khmer Rouge attack VN island of Phu Quoc. Despite the public display of harmony great tension existed due to Kampuchea fearing VN expansion & launch a major attack on 30 April 1978 against VN. China tries to mediate but on 25 December 1978, Vietnam launched a full-scale invasion of Kampuchea and over ran the Khmer Rouge forces within 2 weeks. On 8 Jan 79 the Peoples Republic of Kampuchea was formed & Viet Nam subsequently occupied the country for the next 10 years until the last VN troops withdrew 26 Sep 1989. Mail throughout this period is not easily found.

PVA originally formed in 1944 by Ho Chi Minh & known as the Armed Propaganda Unit for National Liberation to drive out Japanese occupants & French colonialists & commonly called Viet Minh was by this time during the Viet- Nam war more organised, better equiped & battle hardened to eventually obtain the reunification of the country as Socialist Republic of Viet-Nam in July 1976 after the defeat of the USA in the Viet-Nam war.
