Hotson, Makron Mission, c/o Postmaster Karachi from Noorthai & Jeffery & Sons, Saddlers & endorsed Per Parcel Post bearing EDV11 4a [damaged] & GV 1r w/indistinct cancellation & black on buff 9/Karachi Cant registration label & unrecorded unframed loose type Passed Censor/Karachi h/s [100mm nominal x 21mm w/lettering 9mm in height] in violet ......From early times & especially during the 1880 - 1897 period & up until the late 1920's there was much concern regarding the illegal trade in guns & weapons reaching the Afghanistan tribes who were & still are waging war against the west....The Mekran Mission, initially commencing in the 1910-11 winter, with a British Naval blockade of the Mekran coast tried in vain to curb the constant supply of Arms reaching the tribes, the mission continued unsuccessfully into & throughout WW1....associated mail is rare

[15013] PERSIAN GULF - INDIA...OHMS HMS SHOREHAM with NAVAL CENSOR 1940 (Jan 14) Stampless OHMS envelope to Keamari, Karachi with blue oval Senior Naval Officer /14 Jan 1940 /Persian Gulf Division & with red triangular Free Postage /Naval Force's /Passed /By /Bombay /G.P.O. hand stamps & on reverse violet oval Sea Transport Headquarters India /20 Jan 1940 /Bombay hand stamp together with partial Karachi [23 Jan] transit cds & Kesmari [23 Jan] arrival cds......................The Senior naval Officer hand stamp was allocated to sloop HMS Shoreham commanded by Capt. C.M. Graham & deployed in the Persian Gulf & Arabian Sea. This was clearly a very important HQ vessel as HM Sloop's of this type are normally commanded by a Lt. Cmdr however Capt. Graham had on board three Lt. Cmdr's.

This was reinforced in October 1914, and in Jan 1915 they subdued a Turkish inspired rebellion & attack on the town. The mail of this small force being transmitted through the civil P.O. with the Muscat force using the distinctive type of rare "M" Censor handstamp
