After the armistice Britain occupied parts of the former Ottoman Empire & in order to maintain stability 144 Turks were in stages deported & interned at Malta as Political Prisoners with the last of them being released during the latter part of October 1921...mail is not common

Censor 1076 was one of a block of 12 between 1074 -1085 that was issued & used in Malta from 19 Oct - 17 Nov 1914

A remarkable item 107 days in transit which Davis in Burma Postal History p153 makes reference to this card.... There were four camps: Münster I was outside the city in open farming country, Münster II was at the racecourse, Münster III was a former Army barracks, and Münster IV was reserved for Russian prisoners.

[20327] GB -HOLLAND..WW1 REGISTERED INSURED POW MAIL from I.O.M. 1916(Mar 30) GB 3d Brown registered stationary envelope to Rotterdam uprated with 5d & ˝d tied The Camp Knockaloe/Peel cds & with Registration & Value Declared labels & manuscript "Insured for twenty pounds" from POW in Camp 4, Compound 3 Hut 1 with oval Aliens Detention Camp /Censored /Knockaloe I.O.M. handstamp partly overlaid by rare oval Postkantoor /Vlissingen /Queenborough wax seal & on reverse framed Folkestone /Vlissingen (2 Apr) datestamp & Rotterdam arrival (3 Apr) arrival cds. ................................................................................................ Mails to Holland were mostly carried by Zeeland Steamship Co. sailing between Flushing to Folkstone or Queenborough. On outbreak of war Queenborough was closed to Dutch steamships but other routes remained open, further changes to routes took place under Admiralty orders during 1915 & 1916. In Feb & Mar 1916 the Zeeland sailings were temporarily suspended & outward letter mails were carried by Great Eastern Railway steamers, the Zeeland sailing recommenced in April. Very unusual being allowed to pass without tax despite being registered. As at 2000 the CCSG record 18 WS 1 wax seal censors although more have certainly survived.

Box 19 Kiambu Down prison (this was a maximun security camp) from Manyani Special Detention camp cancelled Manyani Camp (29 Mar) with alongside violet framed Postal Frank /H.M. Prison /Manyani (Kenya) & unframed Censored handstamps. ................................................................................................ Rare camp to camp mail between native prisoners during the Mau Mau rebellion that first kindled itself in Aug 1952 & by Oct troops from Britain had been flown in & a State of Emergency was declared on the 20th lasting until December 1959 by which time 10,000 Mau Mau members were dead & 80,000 suspects detained. Problems & sporadic attacks continued even after Kenya was granted independence mainly instigated by the Meru tribe people

Box 237, London E.C.1 bearing Bananas 3 x 3d + definitive 2 x 1d making strange 11d rate tied Gibraltar Camp cds & with matching Registration label No 3625 from civil internee Ch. v.d. Wichen, Gibraltar Camp 11, Kingston & with PC90 / Opened By / Examiner 622 preceeded with blue crayon D/ & on opposite side continuous Crowns /Opened By /Examiner /1415 labels with on reverse oval Kingston Jamaica /Registered (10 Dec) & New York (14 Dec) despatch & transit datestamps. ................................................................................................ After France fell in 1940 it was felt the Germans could advance through Spain threatening Gibraltar & denying the allies access to the Mediterranean. British authorities decided to evacuate as many as possible of the civilian population of Gibraltar to safer zones, mostly to the UK but 25 Oct 40 a group of 1104 of these evacuees arrived at Kingston with a further 400 evacuees arriving Port Arthur on 15 Dec 40. These evacuees were deemed Wards of the Crown & were not allowed to follow crafts or professions for pay nor could they reside anywhere other than the camp. All the able males were mbilised into the Pioneer Corps & as such acted as guards for the POW & Internment Camp. Ref..The Military Mail of Jamaica by Derek Sutcliffe 1982........
