The Cambodian–Vietnamese War began with isolated clashes along the land and maritime boundaries of Vietnam and Kampuchea between 1975 and 1977. In May 1977 Kampuchean forces under Khmer Rouge attack VN island of Phu Quoc. Despite the public display of harmony great tension existed due to Kampuchea fearing VN expansion & launch a major attack on 30 April 1978 against VN. China tries to mediate but on 25 December 1978, Vietnam launched a full-scale invasion of Kampuchea and over ran the Khmer Rouge forces within 2 weeks. On 8 Jan 79 the Peoples Republic of Kampuchea was formed & Viet Nam subsequently occupied the country for the next 10 years until the last VN troops withdrew 26 Sep 1989.
