1840 (Mar 29) Stampless folded Entire to Mrs Gillespie without Postal markings & torn on inside from clumsy opening written by Captain Gillespie, 4th Dragoons from Kirklee presumably carried by a returning friend and delivered by hand with manuscript note received 9 March. Typed transcript of the entire letter is included “Capt. R. R. GillespieI had left the Army of the Indus at Bukkhur on the 7th Jan & he writes that Lord Keane has promised him the Brevet rank of Major for distinguished service in Afghanistan & also Gillespie has offered his services for the Expedition leaving for China (1st Opium War) in May ………Historically important he did not get to China
