1852 (Sep 12) Stampless outer from Limerick to East India Company, London cancelled Limerick d/s & sent via Liverpool where missorted into New York bag. The “Herman” sailing from Bremmen on 10 Sept picking up mail at Southampton on 15th & arriving New York on 28th where circular New York /A.Pckt /Sep 29 was applied showing 24c to be collected & with unframed 3/Cents h/s due to British P.O. The error noticed & with manuscript “Missent to E.I. College, Hereford” & returned on 2nd Oct via “Pacific” to Liverpool arriving 13th where probably the manuscript 2d was applied to collect the unpaid penny post charge from Limerick to London…..vertical filing crease but nevertheless an unusual item of missent transatlantic mail & comes complte with previous owners written up notes
