1892 (Dec 27) Plain envelope with some fox spots to Paris endorsed Troupes De Madagascar, Le Caputaine Co. ‘L Escorte du Resident General de France a’ Tananarive with manuscript Signature in blue crayon & bearing Peace & Commerce 5c & 10c tied Tananarive cds & with alongside Corr. Des Armees/L.V. No 2 cds with on back partial Paris arrival cds…… The 1st Madagascar war started with Naval bombardments of Ports on 7 May 1883 after France picked a quarrel. Peace came 17 Dec 1885 & Madagascar was made a Protectorate with Diego Suarez becoming a Fr. Possesssion. The French Resident at Tananarive was granted a “Military Escort” & a military franchise existed from 24 June 1885 to 1 January 1890 with the franchise being re-instated 15 Feb 1895 just prior to the 2nd Madagascar Expedition. rn
