1914 Group of 5 coloured Russian picture postcards of St. Petersburg dated between 29 Aug – 6 Sep to Brighton all bearing GV ½d with 2 cancelled Mute Naval 3 ringsapplied Kirkwall, 1 with 19mm solid black circular obliterator & 2 with Mute Cross’s. 1st card (29 Aug) states “I am safe after Friday’s engagement, I expect you will feel pride in my Squadron if you read the papers”. 2nd card (30 Aug) states “None the worse for our encounter with the Germans, I bought these cards in Russia”. 5th card (6 Sep) states “longing to have another smash at them” ….The battle of Heligoland took place on Friday 28 Aug 1914 when the British Battlecruiser Force sank or damaged several German vessels & inflicted casualties of 1162 Germans to only 75 British Naval ratings
