Description

1915 (Jun 16) Y.M.C.A. printed envelope endorsed On Active Service to Miss L. Atkinson, Temporary Hospital, Bordeaux forwarded to Urgent Cases Hospital, Bar le Duc & then again to Valence bearing GV 1d tied Felixstowe / Sussex cds & with 6 sided T 30 handstamp with France 10c & 20c Postage Dues tied Bordeaux (19 Jun) cds deleted with pen strokes yet Taxed again with adhesives tied Talence / Gironde (20 Jun) cds & again deleted with pen strokes with on reverse flap sealed with remnants red Wax seals & showing Bordeaux (19 Jun), Talence (20 Jun) & Bar le Duc / Meuse (25 Jun) transit cds the last under green wax seals closing the flaps …….. Seems the French P.O. were enthusiastic with use of Postage Dues deeming it underpaid Civilian mail & understandable due to no military cancel, endorsement or countersignature. The P.O. at Bar le Duc clearly opening & reclosing the envelope presumably looking for delivery clues to to one of the many volunteer nurses tending to our sick & wounded soldiers in the heat of war ..
