1915 Stampless envelope to Cowley, Near Exeter endorsed Lieut. Williamson R.N.R & cancelled on arrival London /Received From H.M. Ships /No Charge To Be Raised (21 Jun) from HMS Canopus at the Dardanelles perhaps written around the time 22-23 May when under heavy fire she towed sister ship HMS Albion stranded on a sandbank off Gaba Tepe before undergoing a refit at Malta …….. HMS Canopus served in the Dardanelles campaign from February 1915 taking part by covering HMS Queen Elizabeth during the the March bombardment of the Turkish Forts & took part in the attack on the Narrows forts afterwards escorting the damaaged HMS Inflexible from Mudros to Malta. She returned to the Dardanelles & took part in the landings of 25 April. Later after rescuing HMS Albion she was refitted at Malta. Lieut William A Williamson was appointed to the Canopus 29 Aug 1914 & is still listed on board in Oct 1915.
