1918 Plain undated stampless envelope to San Jose from Sgt. R. Menzel, 822 Aero Squadron, c/o Aviation Officer, American Air Service, 335 Eaton Place, London S.W.1 & with scarce provisional blue on white OPENED BY / CENSOR label (Mark 24C) with manuscript P.2552……….Only a dozen or so of these labels have been recorded & Examiner numbers above 2000 had only a short life (Mark ). US 822 Aero Sqdn was a Repair Squadron based at Yate, Gloucester from 20 Apr – 29 Jun 1918 after which the around 150 men of the Unit went to France (Boyden) All together an interesting item that can be dated between 20 Apr – 2 Jul 1918 when they were enroute to France..
