SHIPS, unframed AIR MAIL & on reverse Tombstone CENSOR with initials & date 28/11 above used to indicate the 5d Air Rate was paid….British Naval Force H under the command of Vice Admiral Somerville was formed & operational late June 1940 & based at Gibraltar. Germany had total control of France by 10 June 40 & Italy entered the war on the Axis side making it imperative that Britain controlled the entrance to the Mediterranean Sea and maintain a supply route to Malta
