On 1st September ’45 the 6th South African division crossed the river Arno & reached the German defences known as the Gothic Line, where after much bitter fighting & with winter approaching no further advance was possible & APO 5 moved up to San Giovanni & although Proud only records it 23 – 24 April it probably remained there a week.
