1957 (Jun 15) Plain airmail envelope endorsed Forces Air Mail to Calne, Wilts bearing GB Wilding 2½d tied B.F.P.O. Christmas Island cds & endorsed on reverse No 186 from 5/- Bond, c/o BFPO 170 ….British nuclear tests were conducted from 1952-57 on Australian territories at Maralinga, Emu Field & Monte Bello Is. followed by 9 tests on Christmas Is. during 1957-58. Some of these were considerably more powerful than those dropped on Nagasaki & Hiroshima with little regard being given to protective clothing, ingestion of contaminated food & water, adequate danger warnings to indigenous peoples or for that matter troops.
