“1941 (Apr 11) Printed airmail envelope to Newtown, Sydney bearing Platypus 9d tied faint DIV. SUPPLY HQ / S.W.1 cds & although Proud says “”The Corps Postal Unit left for Greece it did not land during March & the datestamp is presumed lost”” !! with violet triangle PASSED BY CENSOR /Crown 1916 hand stamp & red on white OPENED BY CENSOR /2 dot in opposing lines label tied violet diamond 2 PASSED BY CENSOR 995 handstamp …..Proud’s wording “”The Corps P.U. left for Greece, but did not land, in March 1941 datestamp (presumably lost) puzzles me. Is he saying the date stamp was lost prior to landing in Greece or does he mean a landing took place afer March i.e. April ? A question to be answered but in any event mail from allied forces during the Greek campaign of 1941 is very scarce DIV. SUPPLY HQ / S.W.1. Proud records this used in Egypt to (10.3.41) so possibly this extends that date or was it used aboard Transport & did not land due to Allied retreat. Italy on 28 Oct 40 invades from Albania, Greeks push them back. 6 Apr 41 Germans intervene & invade Yugoslavia & Greece crossing the Yugoslav-Greek border on 10 Apr & broke through the Commonwealth/Greek defences in Kleidi area on 12 Apr & pushed South with the Allies on the defensive retreating but Germans enter Athens on 27 Apr…An evacuation of Allied forces many to Crete commences 24 Apr.
